18th Congress of the European Hematology Association, Stockholm, June 13-16, 2013
STOCKHOLM, June 10, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
Since 2010 the European Hematology Association (EHA) and the Wallace H Coulter Foundation (WHCF) have been in a close partnership, in which EHA was the beneficiary of generous donations for its projects. The support of the WHCF has been the prime mover for the setup of the EHA-ASH Translational Research Training in Hematology (TRTH) program and an important contributor towards the vast expansion of EHA's outreach program. Both programs have had a major impact on the Association's array of activities and global network.
The importance of the achievements of Wallace Coulter, the inventor of the Coulter Counter - the most valuable tool in the hematology laboratory, as a person and his organization cannot be underestimated for the hematological community as well as for EHA due to the Foundation's support. EHA is glad to be able to pay tribute and commemorate the 100th birthday of Wallace Coulter.
The EHA-theme of the year, from June 2013 to June 2014, is dedicated to "Age and Aging in blood disorders". Initiated as a thread to link all initiatives driven by hematologists on a specific item, this year's theme encompasses not only the aging of patients with blood disorders but also the concept of the aging of cells. Both fields have developed over the past years. Multiple aspects of the theme will be reported on and debated throughout the year. In particular, the definition of "who is old?"; patients may not have the same thresholds as clinicians.
This year for the first time, the EHA congress program is complemented by a dedicated advocacy track. This track combines all patient and policy related sessions into one comprehensive full-day program on Saturday, June 15.
Topics that will be discussed in different sessions:
• Patients' involvement as partners in clinical research
• Explaining unavailability of treatment
• Delivering healthcare in times of economic crises
• Personalized medicine
