The Dan David Prize award ceremony took place yesterday at Tel Aviv University, in the presence of Prof. Joseph Klafter, President of Tel Aviv University and Chairman of the Dan David Prize Board, Prof. Ruth Arnon, President of the Israel Academy of Sciences, members of the David family, the 2013 Dan David Prize laureates, foreign ambassadors, and prominent academic and business figures from Israel and abroad.

Awards were presented in the fields of:
Classics, the Modern Legacy of the Ancient World to
Prof. Sir Geoffrey Lloyd (UK) for his work on the subject of Greek science as a major field in the history of classical philosophy and for having illuminated the roots of modern science.
Ideas, Public Intellectuals and Contemporary Philosophers to
Prof. Michel Serres (France) for his intimate knowledge of the western tradition in philosophy and science and for his discussion of a vast range of current issues.
Mr. Leon Wieseltier (US) for his confrontation and engagement with the central issues of our times, setting the standard for serious cultural discussion.
Preventive Medicine to
Prof. Esther Duflo (France) for her work on social conditions and strategies related to the alleviation of poverty, which deal directly with prevention of disease.
Prof. Alfred Sommer (US) for his unexpected and striking discovery and demonstration that
vitamin A supplementation has the power to save children's lives.
The ceremony included artistic performances by the Bat Sheva Dance Company, and the Ruth Kanner Theatre Group.
The laureates donate 10 percent of their prize money towards 20 scholarships for outstanding doctoral and post-doctoral students from all over the world.
