David Price, group director for Health Assured said today, "Mental illness can be difficult to spot and range from mood swings to common disorders such as depression and anxiety. Sadly it affects both employee and employer because 40% of all sickness is mental health related. If employers start seeing any uncharacteristic behaviour traits that have not been previously present then it could indicate that they are experiencing mental health issues - action to address should be taken immediately."
Price continues, "Employers have a responsibility for the welfare of their employees and can indeed assist workers. A good place to start is providing a space for the employee and manager to speak comfortably and in confidence. Having policies and procedures can be effective with maintaining a health working environment. This can be in the form of a mental health at work policy or, a systematic way of targeting and eliminating stress. Employers need to ensure that managers are equipped and trained to deal with such issues sensitively."
"The key to managing stress and mental health is to have clear policies and to develop a culture in mental health awareness. By lifting the taboo and stigma within your organisation you can instantly see a greater rise of people accessing support before things get out of hand and in turn having an effect on your bottom line."
David Price concludes, "Many of us have our own pre-determined views on stress and mental health. By creating awareness and assisting individuals you can positively affect the welfare of both your employee and the business."
