With thousands of entries and 160 judges, this was no small judging event. Held in the Olympia, London which boasts almost an acre of floor space, the judges had 4 days to work their way through the 131 categories with their mobile judging app.
Previous years of using the app, have seen frequent system failures with judges repeatedly switching to paper at the first opportunity. However this year, D&AD replaced the existing systems, and to do this they tasked digital agency JP74. JP74 has worked with D&AD's for 6 years, and has designed and developed the D&AD website, along with their customer facing web apps such as portfolio, awards entry system and the logging awards system.
The judges, who included some of the worlds most respected creative directors carried out the judging of 150 rounds using the new judging app, that featured a new flexible system, that worked around the issues with connecting to hundreds of handheld devices. The aim of the design was to create a an application interface for the judges that was simple, intuitive and unobtrusive. By utilising the framework that has been established in all D&AD projects the look and feel was able to be retained, whilst totally customising the interface for mobile use.
Expectations were surpassed and after three months of a very intensive development window; The new handheld webapp along with its cloud based judging management and results platform allowed the event to pass on schedule.
"The D&AD Judging application has massively improved our ability to manage the judging process. The system is very well designed, extremely user friendly and in it's first year is by far the most efficient system we have used."

JP74 are extremely pleased with how the app was received and its performance throughout the week.
"Helping at this years event has really brought home how much of a challenge we took with this project. It was thrilling on the first day to see the judges picking up their devices, intuitively knowing how to use it and just getting on with what they came to do."

As well as the handheld voting application, JP74 developed the entire awards system, inclusive of the entry system, the back-office admin system and the judging system itself.
The handheld application runs on the iPod touch devices but will also work other iOS and android devices. It is a HTML5 web application but feels like a native application with swipe navigation and the ability to continue working without network connection.
