Absolute Digital Media Reveals April Fool's Joke
CHELMSFORD, England, April 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
Hundreds of internet users across the country were Absolutely April Fooled into thinking that the Essex based agency had developed an app which allowed them to hack into Google's Gmail system.
The humorous marketers at Absolute Digital Media invited the nation to enter the Gmail address of their unsuspecting victim under the premise of full access to their inbox. However, upon filling in the relevant details on the website, the user was presented with an April Fools pop up. Over 300 gullible people for the joke with hundreds more sharing the page with their friends via social media in the hope of tricking them too.
The team at Absolute Digital Media were also inundated with calls and emails from intrigued and concerned people who wanted more information on the app, including a private investigation firm!
Known for their sense of humour, the team at Marketing Week Engage Awards shortlisted agency, Absolute Digital Media, were keen to get involved in this year's April Fool's Day, and so #GmailHack was born. CEO, Ben Austin, reflects on the company's prank.
"There's been a number of online April Fool's Pranks over the years that we've admired, including Google Smell and Twitter charging for vowels. The beauty of it is that in hindsight, it seems ridiculous but in the moment itself it can easily catch you out. Obviously we'd never have access to that sort of data and if we did we certainly wouldn't be sharing it with the world. Nevertheless we still managed to trick a number of people."
None of the information entered through Absolute Digital Media's April Fool's Day project will be stored or used in anyway.
