The projects will have a combined generation capacity of approximately 100 megawatts (MW), the equivalent power needed to supply approximately 500,000 Mexican homes.
The 3 phase output UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) systems Protect 8 will be provided to equip both facilities. Protect 8 range is a state-of-the-art, double-conversion topology UPS. It is a robust and cost effective solution designed for highly demanding applications ensuring safe operations in harsh environments.
Co-generation or combined heat and power (CHP) is a power station's ability to generate electricity and useful heat at the same time. For the same output of useful energy, cogeneration uses far less fossil energy than does traditional heat and power production. Cogeneration is growing as a form of local or distributed generation as heat and power production take place at or near the point of consumption, most of the time, industrial parks. It helps local industries reduce their energy costs and carbon footprint.
In addition to supplying power for the two cities, the cogeneration plant in Altamira (in the state of Tamaulipas) will contribute to a chemical facility's reduced energy costs and in Bajío, (in the state of Querétaro), for a hygiene product manufacturing plant, by making them more energy-efficient.
The Altamira co-generation plant includes gas turbines and condensing steam turbines with two extractions. A total of 60 megawatts (MW) of power will be provided, broken down into 51 MW of power supplied by the gas turbine group and 9 MW supplied by a condensing steam turbine with low and medium pressure extractions.
Iberdrola's co-generation plant in Bajío in the city of San Juan del Río, Querétaro, is also a combined cycle plant with gas and condensing steam turbines with medium pressure extraction. The plant, located in an industrial complex, will generate up to 54.2 megawatts (MW) of power.
