NEW YORK, March 13, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
With the first set of new generic Top Level Domains (new GTLDs) now in General Availability, several diverse views have been voiced about its impact on the Domain Name Industry. Leading provider of Domains & Web Presence Products, ResellerClub, who enable their resellers to offer these domains, recently published a report card on how these gTLDs have performed from the time they were rolled out; but first, let's get some perspective.

From 22 gTLDs in 27 Years to 700+ TLDs in 2 Years!
The Domain Name industry has long been served by popular gTLDs such as .COM, .NET, .ORG, .BIZ etc. Prior to the launch of these new gTLDs, there were approximately over 200 million domains registered on just 22 gTLDs, and over 60% of these were .COM domains, making it increasingly difficult to get relevant & meaningful web addresses. ICANN's new gTLD program was created to specifically address this need and over the next two years, thousands of fresh new strings such as 'hire.cab', 'education.loan' will be up for grabs.
ResellerClub Report - The Numbers so far
Since its launch, over 230,000 new gTLDs have been registered till date and globally, extensions like .guru have the highest registration volumes followed by .photography and .tips. According to the ResellerClub report which accounts for the number of domains registered through them, .guru is at the top of the list, however, newly added TLDs like .today (released on 19th Feb) and .tips (released on 26th Feb) have more registrations compared to .photography (released on 12th Feb). With domain strings like .menu and .wiki, amongst others opening up for General Availability in the next week, it is expected that the rankings of the new gTLDs will fluctuate in the coming weeks.
Shridhar Luthria, General Manager & Business Head of ResellerClub said "We are thrilled with the response we have received to the new gTLDs we have integrated in our system so far and we've launched a number of initiatives to help our resellers capitalize on this new opportunity. These include a "Wishlist" feature that will help a customer track the launch of every new gTLD, as well as the availability of a desired domain name. Resellers can soon accept paid pre-registrations even before a TLD launches and will have access to a Calendar with email/RSS notifications that resellers can use to track the launch progress of every new gTLD supported by our platform."
With an increasing number of domain name buyers looking for short, specific domain names that are specific to their individual needs, new gTLDs definitely offer an opportunity to break away from the clutter and establish a strong online presence. The purchase patterns of new gTLDs reveal some interesting early trends, and stakeholders believe that this will eventually lead to a major revamp of the Web as we know it
