APCOA PARKING Donates 15,000 Euros to 'Médecins Sans Frontières'
STUTTGART, Germany, December 17, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
The APCOA PARKING Group has decided to donate 15,000 euros to charity. Rather than buying Christmas presents for clients and employees, Europe's leading parking facility operator is sponsoring 'Médecins Sans Frontières' to facilitate its deployments in crisis areas worldwide, including its efforts to contain the spread of the Ebola virus in Africa.
"The work of Médecins Sans Frontières needs all the support it can get to combat Ebola but also to conduct humanitarian missions in many other crisis areas," said Ralf Bender, CEO of APCOA PARKING Group. "As a company, we have a social commitment. That's why we want our donation to contribute to the effort to get urgently required medical care to the local population and to people in need."
Médecins Sans Frontières has been actively involved in the fight against Ebola in West Africa since March 2014, specifically in Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Mali. Active worldwide, the organisation runs six treatment centres in West Africa with more than 600 beds each. Since March, more than 6,400 patients have been admitted, of whom around 4,000 were diagnosed with Ebola. All in, around 270 international and 3,100 local staff are deployed in the Ebola aid projects at the moment, including physicians, psychiatrists, nurses, and logistics operators.
The German chapter "Ärzte ohne Grenzen" was formed in 1993 as a non-profit organisation. It is part of the network of Médecins Sans Frontières, the international organisation for medical emergency aid that was set up in 1971. Today, the organisation provides medical care to people in crisis areas and war zones in more than 70 countries around the world. It is sponsored in its humanitarian effort by private donors, companies and foundations. In 1999, the international organisation was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
