Ballast Nedam Builds Biomass Power Plant in Delfzijl
NIEUWEGEIN, The Netherlands, July 27, 2011 /PRNewswire/ --
Ballast Nedam is part of a consortium that will start the construction of a Biomass Power Plant in the Dutch port of Delfzijl towards the end of 2011. The project has been commissioned by BioEnergieCentrale Delfzijl B.V. (Eneco Solar, Bio & Hydro B.V.). In the consortium, Ballast Nedam has joined forces with German company Areva Renewables GmbH and with Metso Power Oy from Finland. The plant has a capacity of 49 megawatts and will produce energy from recycled waste wood chips.
The contract for Ballast Nedam has a value of approximately €48 million. Ballast Nedam's contribution will consist of supervising the licensing process and the design & construct of the project's civil engineering and structural components.
The BEC Delfzijl plant will be located alongside the maritime channel and will begin operations in the summer of 2013. A 49-megawatt capacity generates enough electricity to meet the needs of 120,000 households. At present, there are four wood-burning power plants in the Netherlands, mostly linked to waste incinerators and generating about 90 megawatts of energy.
Ballast Nedam integrates all working processes in the entire chain, thereby ensuring the highest level of coordination for our clients. Chain integration is made possible in this project thanks to the network of specialist companies in the Ballast Nedam family. Ballast Nedam Engineering, Ballast Nedam Foundations and Ballast Nedam Specialist Earthmoving are responsible for a significant part of the structural work.
This project supports Ballast Nedam's strategy of focusing on integrated projects and on niche markets such as industrial construction, hospitals, offshore wind turbines, secondary raw materials and alternative fuels.

The company operates mainly in the Netherlands on integrated and other projects for companies, public authorities and housing consumers, in the fields of mobility, housing, employment, leisure and energy.
