LONDON, December 20, 2011 /PRNewswire/ --
Motorhome owners have again been warned to take measures this winter to ensure that their motorhome is safe from opportunist thieves. This is because catalytic converters have recently been targeted by thieves.
A leading light in the motorhome insurance field, Comfort Insurance, has explained that over recent months the number of claims for stolen catalytic converters has risen sharply. Managing Director, Peter Cue, has been quoted saying: "During the winter months many people choose to lay their vehicle up. We recommend that owners check their vehicle over on a daily basis. We also think it would be a great idea for owners to do everything they possibly can to make it difficult for thieves to get under the vehicle."
A stolen catalytic converter can be very expensive to replace as they can cost up to £3,000, which is a staggeringly high price for a victim to pay!
Essentially, a catalytic converter is part of the exhaust system on the vehicle. It is a regular component on modern petrol and diesel vehicles as it helps to clean up pollutant emissions. The reason they are attractive to thieves is because they contain precious metals including platinum and palladium. This therefore gives them a very high scrap value.
Comfort Insurance has urged motorhome owners to take necessary measures during what could potentially be troublesome times whilst their vehicle is not being used.
