GLASGOW, Scotland, May 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
Despite mixed weather predicted for the bank holiday weekend, Brits are likely to be barbecuing in their droves as Dobbies Garden Centres is reporting rocketing sales of BBQs - up 84% on 2013, showing people across the UK have an insatiable appetite for summer living.
The garden centre retailer has reported its best week ever for BBQ sales (w/c 12th May) and a sharp rise in purchases of outdoor furniture, up 58%, with people preparing to party in their gardens following an inspirational Chelsea Flower Show, as well as celebrating bank holiday weekend.
The past few months have seen fairly average Spring weather, but sales of outdoor heating are almost double (49%) what they were this time last year and it seems we are preparing to BBQ whatever the weather. Solar lighting is also becoming massively popular for gardens. Sales are up 78% in Dobbies stores as people use them to extend their garden parties after dark.
Across its 34 UK stores, experts at Dobbies have noticed a distinct trend for customers buying products which allow them to entertain come rain or shine.
Katharine Poulter, Commercial Director at the garden centre chain said: "Our customers know that in the UK you can't rely on the weather, but rather than cancel outdoor activities or plans, they're preparing for all weather eventualities. From chimineas, pop-up gazebos and patio heaters to cute little lanterns and solar lights, people are using accessories to keep their outdoor party going strong, come rain, hail or shine.
"We are noticing a distinct trend for people putting as much effort into creating their outdoor living space as they do a living room or bedroom. There's so much choice now when it comes to garden furniture and accessories that people are inspired to give it the wow factor."
When it comes to outdoor cooking, it appears that Brits prefer the easy option. Sales of gas BBQs are much stronger than the old fashioned charcoal versions with seven out of Dobbies' 10 best-selling BBQs being gas powered.
And according to staff in Dobbies stores, when it comes to choosing the BBQ, it's still men who like to pick. Katharine added: "When customers visit our stores they spend a fair bit of time looking at BBQs and it's one of the more common products our experts give advice on.
"As men get more daring in the kitchen, we're now seeing the appetite expand in outdoor cooking. It's no longer just about a sizzling sausage - it's about incredibly delectable family mealtime dishes being created outdoors on a rotisserie, a smoker or wood burning pizza oven."
