Teachers are being asked to help identify the engineers of the future by encouraging their students to enter the Bosch Technology Horizons Award for 2011.
The Bosch Technology Horizons Award is an essay writing competition which is split into two age groups and is designed to encourage young people to consider a career in engineering. This year, there is a choice of essay question in both age groups with cash prizes for the winners and work placements at a Bosch site in the UK.
Entries can be submitted online at http://www.bosch.co.uk/technologyhorizons/ and the closing date is March 18th 2011.
In the 14-18 age group, the first prize is GBP700 and two weeks of paid work experience. In the 18-24 age group, the first prize is GBP1,000 and the opportunity to undertake six months' paid work experience at a Bosch site in the UK. Winners in both age groups will receive an invitation for two people to attend the Royal Academy of Engineering Awards Dinner in June 2011.
Every teacher submitting 15 or more of their students' essays in the 14-18 age group will receive a Bosch Xeo cordless universal cutter. The two schools submitting the highest number of essays will each receive a hamper of Bosch products worth GBP500.
Caitlin Willis, 2010 winner in the 14-18 age group, commented: "I never really realised before how big a part engineering plays in our everyday lives. But now, after researching it, I know how different our lives would be without engineering and it has made me consider it as a career."
Peter Fouquet, President of Bosch in the UK commented: "125 years ago Robert Bosch set up his first workshop as a 25 year old engineer after studying to become a precision mechanic. Robert Bosch had a vision to manufacture products which would help people in their everyday lives and we want to encourage young people to have a similar vision."
He continued: "Engineering is about problem solving, but the fact is that we have a shortage of engineers in the UK which must be addressed if we are to solve many of the critical problems we face, such as climate change. The Bosch Technology Horizons Award is designed to show young people that engineering can be a worthwhile career which can make an enormous contribution to society."
