Comfort Insurance Warns Motorhome Owners of the Dangers of Potholes

Over the past few months a number of local councils have been given a substantial amount of funding in order to fix the UK's roads.  Potholes have become a real issue in the UK as long winters and an increasing amount of traffic have led to the deterioration of roads in both cities and rural areas.

As a motorhome owner, potholes are particularly problematic as they can cause issues with your suspension, tyres and tracking.  Numerous motorhome owners have already had to claim money back from their local councils in order to fix damages caused by driving over potholes.

Ben Cue, Comfort Insurance's Head of Operations, said: "We advise all motorhome and campervan owners to be particularly careful when it comes to potholes as they can cause a considerable amount of damage if driven over too quickly.  With this in mind, we are pleased to hear that the government is funding numerous projects across the country in order to reduce the amount of potholes on the roads."  

Cambridge City Council is just one local authority that has recently embarked on a project to fix potholes, however unlike many others they have hired a hi-tech Swedish pothole filler which has been nick-named 'The Dragon'.  The device breathes fire onto tarmac in order to quickly fill large potholes, thus speeding up the process and reducing the amount of time road workers spend exposed to live traffic.

Last year, the amount of potholes in Cambridge increased by 700% to 25,000, leaving the Highways Agency struggling to maintain the roads.  Ben Cue says: "Cambridge is not alone, there are cities and towns across the entire country that have been struggling with the rapid increase in potholes.  We have recently seen reports that Buckinghamshire City Council received two million pounds to fix potholes in their constituency, which highlights the amount of money and time it takes to get rid of them."

Along with driving slowly over potholes, Ben has advised motorhome owners to check and maintain their vehicles after each journey in order to ensure that they have not been damaged.  He explains: "If driven over slowly, it is unlikely that going over one or two potholes will cause too much damage to your motorhome, however over time all the small bumps will soon add up.

"If you do go over potholes while on your journeys it is therefore advisable to check the condition of your tires once you have parked up.  We would also advise having your motorhome's tracking and suspension checked on a regular basis so if there are any issues they can be dealt with before they become any worse."
