Committees in the European and British Parliaments Sponsor Major Gathering of Iranians in Paris on June 27
PARIS, June 7, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
Two committees of European and British Parliaments; Friends of a Free Iran & The Committee for Iran Freedom, are among the co-sponsors of a grand upcoming political gathering in Paris on June 27th, 2014. The event, which is in support of the democratic Iranian opposition, is expected to draw Iranians from all five continents, as well as activists and dignitaries from all over the world.
According to various media sources, last year's gathering drew more than 100,000 participants, hundreds of politicians, parliamentarians and delegates from across the political spectrum.
In a statement issued by the Friends of a Free Iran in the European Parliament: "Nearly 100 prominent dignitaries, 500 parliamentarians; from the US, Europe, Canada, Australia and the Middle East, who represent both sides of the political spectrum, have already confirmed their attendance to this event."
Britain's Parliamentary Committee for Iran Freedom, another sponsor of the Iran gathering and co-chaired by Lord Carlile of Berriew and MP David Amess, issued a separate statement explaining the importance of this year's gathering.
"The event on June 27 represents the growing support for democratic change by the Iranian people. Although last year brought about a Presidential change in Iran, there hasn't been any progression within the regime. Hassan Rouhani, hailed by some as a moderate, has in fact brought about the Iranian regime's most devastating period of brutality. 660 official executions took place during 2013 with over two-thirds of those during Rouhani's reign."
Their statement also details how this year's assembly will focus on the role of western governments, particularly the P5+1, with regard to Iran's continued defiance vis-a-vis enrichment of Uranium for weaponization. There will also be discussions on the changing socio-economic and political landscape under Rouhani's government and condition of Camp Liberty residents in Iraq.
Residents of Camp Liberty are members of the People's Mojahedin organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), the principal Iranian opposition movement. The MEK is the key element of the Iranian opposition coalition, the National Council of Resistance of Iran. Mrs. Maryam Rajavi is the President-elect of the NCRI.
"These Iranians have continued to face terrorist attacks at the hands of the Iraqi regime, leaving tens killed and hundreds wounded. They face an uncertain future for as long as international protection is not granted," the statement by the Parliamentary Committee for Iran Freedom stated.
"It's these gatherings that can have an impact in ensuring their safety and wellbeing." Various Iranian communities will be participating in an event on Friday, June 27th 2014 in Villepinte, Paris. The event is in support of the Iranian Democratic Opposition with special reference to human rights and political prisoners in Iran.
