As the clocks go forward, a new report reveals the impact of unlocking 'Daily Savings Time' for individuals and businesses
LONDON, March 30, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- UK businesses could generate £750 million in savings each year by empowering staff to work smarter and achieve their Daily Savings Time (DST) according to new research. A report on productivity in the UK has identified DST as the time that can be unlocked by rethinking processes and cutting out unnecessary tasks from the workday.

Commissioned by Workfront, the leading provider of cloud-based enterprise work management solutions and compiled by time management expert Clare Evans, the report aims to help business owners establish ways to improve efficiency.
The last Sunday in March is when the UK switched from Greenwich Mean Time into British Summer Time and we lost one hour as the clocks moved forward. However, losing an hour out of the day pales in comparison to the fact that businesses are losing an average of two hours of UK workers' time every workday.
Clare Evans, author of the popular Time Management for Dummies book, discovered that less than 60% of the working day is spent productively. In today's digitally driven office environment, meetings, email, and changing priorities are the worst offenders when it comes to hampering UK office workers' productivity.
One way to immediately address these issues is to introduce more innovative systems and processes in the workplace. A combination of lack of planning, changing priorities and limited resources currently mean that 56% of workers feel overwhelmed. Shockingly, it was also revealed that 57% of office workers spent an hour a day looking for missing documents and 20% spent time recreating documents they couldn't find.
Clare Evans speaks candidly about the effect poor process can have on any business, large or small:
"Today's tools and technology, while enabling companies to stay connected, can also be a major source of distraction and interruption, actually reducing productivity overall. Most businesses could benefit by harnessing cloud-based technologies, like Workfront, to bring tasks into one place and allow for more visibility and collaboration across projects."
Joe Staples, CMO at Workfront commented,
"What we've found with our customers is that using technology can go a long way in increasing productivity throughout a business. Workfront offer businesses a single solution that allows effective management of any project. Instead of endless status meetings and overflowing email inboxes, team members can deliver work to an equal or better standard while also achieving their DST. This gives businesses the opportunity to save money while removing some of the most common frustrations for employees too."
Additional findings of the report include:
The case against unnecessary email
- Email, seen as a key communication tool by many UK companies, is identified as costing UK businesses £1.5 billion a year in wasted time.
- Despite emails taking up an average of 50% of office workers' time, only 14% of emails are likely to be crucial to their work.
The case against excessive meetings
- The average UK employee attends a total of 60 meetings per month with managers citing that 30% of their time is wasted in the process. Reducing the amount of meetings held by 30% could save 200 hours per employee a year.
- The dreaded impromptu meeting was seen as the key productivity killer with the report referencing 40% of workers finding this a hold back.
- Implementing cloud-based applications and enterprise management systems that give businesses a single solution is the future, the report concludes.
