of the past decade' on live tournament circuit
Daniel Negreanu, a member of Team PokerStars Pro, has been recognised as the best poker player of the past decade by independent poker ranking service Global Poker Index (GPI). Daniel Negreanu is one of the world's most famous poker players, winning his first World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet in 1998 at the age of 23. At the time, he was the youngest player to ever win a WSOP bracelet. Since that time, he has worked hard to keep winning major tournaments, competing against the best to become known as one of the most successful poker players in the world.
Negreanu now has lifetime winnings from live poker tournaments of $19,549,209, which places him third on the all-time winnings list. Negreanu's sustained success over the last decade is strong evidence that he is a very skilful player in this highly competitive game.
"I'm very honoured by this award. I've worked hard on my game throughout the decade, so that I could find ways to consistently win year in, year out against tougher and tougher competition each year," said Negreanu. "I've never wanted to rest on my name alone and winning has always been important to me. The game has changed a lot over the past 10 years, but the key ingredient for success hasn't: confidence. I enter the next decade more confident than ever before."
This award caps off a stellar year for Negreanu, which included winning the Bluff Magazine Poker Player of the Year, the Card Player Poker Player of the Year, the World Series of Poker Player of the Year, and finishing 2013 as the number one ranked player on the current GPI rankings. He is not just the best poker player of the last decade, but also the best poker player right now.
The GPI is the world's leading tracker of live poker tournaments and maintains a global ranking of the world's best poker players. The GPI rankings for poker are featured in the USA Today newspaper alongside the listings for other major international sports such as the ATP rankings for tennis and the PGA rankings for golf.
