The eulogy was delivered by Cherie Blair, an active human rights defender and wife of a former British prime minister.
During her career as a politician, Vivian Reding time and again supported the convergence of youth and the digital society in Europe. As European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth, Media and Sport, she played a decisive role in promoting the Erasmus Mundus programme, which marked a new stage in the exchange of European students and scientists with the rest of the world. As European Commissioner for Information Society and Media, she pushed through a reduction in roaming charges within the EU and unquestionably advanced the EU's common internal market in the telecommunications sector. She is also known for her commitment to an open Internet and opposition to on-line censorship to safeguard net neutrality. As EU Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship, since 2010 she has pursued reform of the EU's data protection rules, one of her key visions for a just and secure Europe in the digital age.
Award recipient Viviane Reding: 'It is a great honour for me to receive the Aenne Burda Award. Ms Burda always followed her own path, with vision, an innovative spirit and courage. They are precisely the qualities that I try to be guided by in the political arena. As a convinced European, my personal goal has always been to build a strong Europe that speaks with one voice and is therefore an influential partner on the world stage. A Europe that transcends the common market dimension, a political union. For me, the Aenne Burda Award is a confirmation of the path chosen and an encouragement to continue building Europe.'
The Aenne Burda Award for Creative Leadership has been honouring women for outstanding entrepreneurial and creative achievements since 2006.
