Economy Grows in European Green Capital
HAMBURG, September 27, 2011 /PRNewswire/ --
- Hamburg to be Siemens' Global Wind Energy Head Office
Like no other location in the world, Hamburg, the European Green Capital 2011, has been reaping the benefits from the rise of wind energy. Today, the city boasts a unique concentration of stakeholders from the sector, with almost 2,000 new jobs in the past two years. Now Siemens have announced their plans to move their global wind energy head office from Brande (Denmark) to Hamburg.
Manufacturers such as Siemens, RepowerSystems, Nordex, PowerWind and Vestas have their head offices or sales units in Hamburg. US giant General Electric opened a research centre for offshore wind energy, and Broadwind ENERGY is now also located in Hamburg. Dong Energy has expanded its branch for offshore wind farms, AREVA has expanded its Hamburg wind power office, and wind turbine manufacturer Gamesa has opened an offshore office. The sector's leading certification agencies Germanische Lloyd, Bureau Veritas, SGS and Det Norske Veritas are another good reason for industry players to settle in Hamburg.
Hamburg's wind energy sector benefits from the expertise of related industries: e.g. in aircraft and ship construction, engineers are geared up to meet the requirements of the industry. But also in terms of patent applications for renewable energy, Hamburg is leading the list.
The title "European Green Capital 2011" has been primarily bestowed to Hamburg due to its climate protection scheme. As a growing port and industrial hub, the city has managed to cut CO2 emissions by 15 percent since 1990. Until 2020, emissions are planned to be reduced by 40, and by 2050 even further to 80 percent compared with 1990. Measures to achieve this goal include sustainable business and construction, eco-friendly traffic, and nature conservation (http://www.hamburggreencapital.eu)
