Elsevier Announces 2015 Leading Stars in Education

Outstanding nursing professionals recognized in three categories: Clinical Education, Active Learning in the Classroom, Simulation
Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, announced the winners of the 2015 Elsevier Leading Stars in Education Award (ELSIE). This award recognizes the work of three exceptional nursing faculty members who show extraordinary skill, innovation, and effectiveness in promoting student learning, professionalism and self-confidence.
The categories and winners include:
- Clinical Education: Sue Chase-Cantarini, DNP, RN, CHSE, Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Utah
- Active Learning in the Classroom: Victoria Hedderick, DEd., MSN, RN, Nursing Professor at Edinboro University
- Simulation: Cynthia Rubbelke, MEd, MSN(R), RN, E-technology expert for Saint Louis University School of Nursing
"All three of these winners have become master teachers, providing a stimulating environment for this kind of education," said John Danaher, President, Elsevier Education. Dr. Chase-Cantarini, whose background is in Medical-Surgical Nursing, has taught a variety of baccalaureate nursing courses including Nursing Arts and Skills, Physical Assessment, Community Health and Nursing History/Health Policy and Health Promotion. Dr. Chase-Cantarini's work includes advanced simulation design, development, instruction and scholarship, and she leads a core team of faculty in the development of Interprofessional Education simulation scenarios for health science students. As the primary director of an advanced nursing education grant, she has developed and implemented an innovative online teaching program that prepares student for interprofessional collaboration.
Focused on "active learning," Dr. Victoria Hedderick teaches across the curriculum from sophomore through senior years, assessing students' medication knowledge. In her pharmacology course, Dr. Hedderick has created multiple strategies to interactively deliver the content to students, including having them create a drug commercial. In addition, Dr. Hedderick utilizes gaming as a teaching strategy and bases it on the popular show, "The Amazing Race."
Cynthia Rubbelke is the e-technology expert for Saint Louis University School of Nursing. Her career has focused on keeping pace with the increasing complexities in today's digital healthcare resources for nursing students. She has been instrumental in numerous critical initiatives such as distance learning and flipping the classroom, among others. Ms. Rubbelke's success in providing students with real world experiences in the technological realm of their nursing practice has resulted in improved student competence and comfort in practicing at the patient's bedside.
The 2015 ELSIE award winners were recognized Jan. 3-6, 2015, at the Elsevier Faculty Development Conference in Scottsdale, Ariz.
