Elsevier Announces New Editor-In-Chief for Neurobiology of Learning and Memory
NEW YORK, July 10, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, is pleased to announce that Professor Ted Abel of the University of Pennsylvania has been appointed as the new Editor-in-Chief of Neurobiology of Learning and Memory. He succeeds Professor John Guzowski of the University of California at Irvine on July 1, 2012.
"I am looking forward to taking over as Editor-in-Chief, succeeding Professor John Guzowski," Professor Abel commented. "In his tenure as Editor-in-Chief, John has maintained Neurobiology of Learning and Memory in a strong position as the leading journal in the field of learning and memory. As Editor-in-Chief, I will work to increase the presence of the journal, build its reputation as the place to publish important findings in a timely fashion and expand its coverage in two areas: the cognitive and systems neuroscience of memory and the molecular mechanisms underlying learning and memory."
Professor Abel, a graduate of Swarthmore College, received his Master of Philosophy in biochemistry from the University of Cambridge, where he was a Marshall Scholar and worked with Nobel Laureate Tim Hunt on cell cycle regulation during early development. He received his doctorate from Harvard University, working with Tom Maniatis on transcriptional regulation during development and, after a postdoctoral fellowship with Nobel Laureate Eric Kandel at Columbia University studying the molecular mechanisms of memory storage, he came to the University of Pennsylvania in 1998.
Professor Abel is the Brush Family Professor of Biology in the School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania. He is also Co-Director of the Biological Basis of Behavior Program and Director of an NIMH-funded pre-doctoral training program in behavioral and cognitive neuroscience. He has received numerous awards, including the University of Pennsylvania School of Arts and Sciences Dean's Award for Mentorship of Undergraduate Research, a John Merck Scholars Award, a David and Lucile Packard Fellowship in Science and Engineering and the Daniel X. Freedman Award from the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD).
Professor Abel's primary focus is on understanding the molecular and cellular basis of learning and memory. Using mouse models, he seeks to identify novel therapeutic approaches to treat cognitive deficits associated with many psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders.
About Neurobiology of Learning and Memory
Neurobiology of Learning and Memory provides a forum for developing and nurturing an international community of scholars and practitioners who are interested in all aspects of the neurobiology of learning and memory. The journal welcomes high quality articles that contribute to the full range of research on neural and behavioral plasticity, including learning and memory and related aspects of neural adaptation, at all levels of analysis from molecular biology to behavior. Research areas include all areas of the neurobiology of learning and memory.
Neurobiology of Learning and Memory includes major theoretical, research, and review papers; research reports; brief reports; rapid communications; and notes. In addition, two categories are featured: mini-reviews that succinctly survey appropriate areas of current research or theory; commentaries that serve as vehicles for brief presentations of new theories, hypotheses, points of view, or critiques of current research
