Elsevier Announces the Launch of Multidisciplinary Open Access Journal: One Health
AMSTERDAM, April 23, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --
New OA journal brings together leading experts in human, animal and environmental health
Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, has announced the launch of a new open access journal: One Health. The journal is the Official Journal of the One Health Platform, an international forum that promotes a cross-sectoral and collaborative approach to one health issues, bringing together leading experts from a multitude of research areas.
The launch of the journal stems from the recognition that human, animal and ecosystem health are inseparably linked and that disseminating ideas and cross-fertilizing information between these scientific disciplines contributes to a healthier future for humans, animals and their environment.
One Health will publish high quality research papers, reviews and outbreak reports on inter- and intra-species pathogen transmission and the predisposing factors that lead to their emergence. Research areas include virus discovery, antimicrobial resistance, veterinary science, ecosystem health, food safety, public health and emergency preparedness. The journal will focus heavily on speed of publication and a fair and rigorous peer review process of all papers.
"Bridging the gap between research topics that were traditionally studied in isolation is essential to improving our understanding of the origin, spread and prevention of infectious diseases of humans and animals alike," said Co-Editor-in-Chief of One Health, Ab Osterhaus, University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Germany. "The vast majority of emerging infectious agents in humans cross the species barrier between animals and humans before they start spreading among humans. The journal and Platform will operate in a unique collaboration that aims to break down research discipline barriers and build a 'One Health' community- which has the potential to profoundly change the way we study human, animal and ecosystem health."
Executive Publisher Immunology & Microbiology at Elsevier, Alina Helsloot, commented, "One Health aims to tackle some of the major health issues that are threatening our globalized world today by creating synergies and facilitating the sharing of data and novel scientific findings across sectors, and thereby shaping a new kind of knowledge."
