NSW Government Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major events, Mr Stuart Ayres said the historic two-year partnership between the State's tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW, and Arsenal FC, would see travel to New South Wales and Sydney promoted to Arsenal fans at every home game in the UK.
"Arsenal FC is one of the oldest and most iconic football clubs with a proud 126 year history. The New South Wales Government, and Sydney, is proud to partner with a club that inspires such loyalty and devotion amongst its fans, and we are thrilled to be able to share the sights and attractions of Sydney with them," says Mr Ayres.
Destination NSW Chief Executive Office, Sandra Chipchase said, "We are delighted to partner with Arsenal and cement Sydney's position as Australia's home of football. The Arsenal matches offer a great opportunity for British fans to travel here to support their team and enjoy the laid back lifestyle for which Sydney is famous. The partnership will see Destination NSW promote the amazing experiences to be had when holidaying in Sydney and regional New South Wales," she said.
Sydney has secured numerous major sporting events including the season opener game of American College Football, known as the Sydney College Cup, Sydney Sevens Rugby tournament, NRL Rugby League State of Origin, and Rugby Bledisloe Cup. The city has also previously welcomed Manchester United, Juventus, Chelsea FC and Tottenham Hotspur.
The news follows the recent announcement that Liverpool Legends will play a friendly match against a team of Australian football Legends comprised of previous players from the national team, the Socceroos. The Liverpool Legends game will play in Sydney on 7 January, 2016.
