EXASOL Establishes Largest, Fastest In-Memory Performance Benchmark Ever
- EXASolution, running on Dell server, performs first ever 100TB in-memory TPC-H benchmark, smashing the record and heralding a new generation of analytic applications
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 25, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- EXASOL AG, www.exasol.com, the provider of EXASolution, the world's most powerful engine for analytics and data warehousing, today announces that it has broken yet more records for the Transaction Processing Performance Council's Industry standard TPC-H benchmark across 100TB and 30TB data sizes. EXASOL is the only database company to benchmark an in-memory system ever at 100TB, delivering 140 times performance increase over our nearest competitor. These results demonstrate EXASOL's speed, scalability and cost/performance which have consistently dominated the TPC-H benchmarks since 2008.
"While this benchmark does certify our ability to scale in-memory analytic RDBMS higher than any company has ever demonstrated, and succeed with absolutely crushing superior speed performance and cost/performance, what it really says is that now it is possible to build large and powerful, pure in-memory analytic applications cost effectively," says Mathias Golombek, CTO, EXASOL. "This benchmark heralds the arrival of real-time in-memory analytics for businesses of any size whose primary work is information-based."
"Dell is pleased that our customer EXASOL has achieved this remarkable in-memory performance benchmark," said Joyce Mullen, vice president and general manager, OEM Solutions at Dell. "The combination of EXASolution and Dell server technology provides customers with an industry leading solution for business analytics and data warehousing."
These results were achieved with EXASolution 5.0 running on a Dell PowerEdge R720xd cluster. The results further cement EXASOL's six years of performance leadership since the first publication of TPC-H benchmarks in 2008, and mark a new world record for how large analytical in-memory databases can scale. The 100TB results are not only exemplified as part of the TPC-H benchmark, but are in play, in the real world.
"We were excited, but not at all surprised, to learn of EXASOL's latest record breaking TPC-H benchmarks," commented Andy Done, Data Platform Lead at King Digital Entertainment, makers of the hit games Candy Crush Saga and Farm Heroes Saga. "EXASolution's performance and efficiency, along with its ease of use, were exactly the reasons we selected it to complement Hadoop in our platform. Since we deployed EXASolution, our data volumes have more than doubled and its exceptional performance, even at this scale, is something we benefit from in practice every day."
EXASolution in-memory database engine is engineered from the ground up to drive the fastest analytics. It achieves lightning-fast performance with linear scalability by combining in-memory technology, columnar storage and compression, and massively parallel processing. EXASolution is also self-tuning and self-optimizing, which means that it is easy to use by all and doesn't require engineers to troubleshoot.
"As more and more business interactions become intermediated by software, the world has become a real-time system," says Dan Woods, a veteran CTO and an IT consultant to both buyers and vendors at CITO Research. "But most of the systems used for business weren't created for this world. As companies are forced to operate and understand their businesses in real time, third party validation through benchmarks from organizations like the Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC) show that a technology is up to the task. Without third party validation, it's just a game of she said, he said among the technology vendors." In a recent opinion piece by CITO Research, the current politics of benchmarking and the benefits of these types of standards are summarized. The paper entitled, "Oracle Says Forget about Benchmarks. Here's Why You Shouldn't" highlights how EXASOL excelled on the benchmark and how this type of performance enables various use cases. About the TPC-H benchmarks
The TPC-H benchmark is a performance test of the TPC, a non-profit corporation founded to define database benchmarks and to disseminate objective, verifiable performance data to the industry. The TPC-H benchmark is a decision support benchmark; it consists of a suite of business oriented ad-hoc queries and concurrent data modifications. The queries and the data populating the database have been chosen to have broad industry-wide relevance. This benchmark illustrates decision support systems that examine large volumes of data, execute queries with a high degree of complexity, and give answers to critical business questions.
