Mr. Schvartsman was chosen as the RISI Latin American CEO of the Year Award due to his achievements in the transformation of Klabin, Brazil's largest paper producer. The award, presented to outstanding leaders in the pulp and paper industry, is selected based on a survey to a group of investment analysts and portfolio managers who cover the forest products industry, using criteria that include leadership, vision and strategic accomplishment.
"Mr. Schvartsman delivered a very strong operating turnaround for the company and improved the market view of Klabin completely," said one analyst. "One of the outcomes was that Klabin was one of the best performers in the whole Brazilian stock market in 2011."
Prior to joining Klabin, Mr. Schvartsman was president of San Antonio Internacional from 2008 – 2010 and president of Telemar Participacoes S.A. from 2007 – 2008. With a background in production engineering and graduate degrees in engineering and business administration, Mr. Schvartsman has held various leadership positions at Ultraprev and Duratex S.A.
In addition to accepting his award at RISI's Latin American Pulp and Paper Outlook Conference in Sao Paulo, Mr. Schvartsman will present the keynote speech and join the CEO panel. The conference will feature industry leaders and experts, along with RISI's economists and engineers, as they give their outlook for the Latin American and global forest products industry.
RISI's Latin American CEO of the Year Award was first presented in 2007. RISI organizes four regional CEO awards each year for Europe, Asia, Latin America and North America, with the winner presented at the regional RISI conferences. In addition, the Global CEO of the Year Award is presented at the PPI Awards event, held in Brussels on November 15, 2012.
