Fraport Traffic Figures - August 2011: FRA Records Its Strongest August for Passenger Traffic and Maximum Takeoff Weights
FRANKFURT, Germany, September 12, 2011 /PRNewswire/ --
Airfreight Slides - Steady Traffic Achieved at the Group's Foreign Airports
Serving about 5.35 million passengers in the reporting month, Fraport AG recorded the best August in the history of Frankfurt Airport (FRA). Passenger traffic advanced by 2.5 percent compared to August 2010, which was the previous peak August at FRA. For the first eight months of 2011, Frankfurt Airport welcomed 37.45 million passengers - a jump of 7.0 percent year-on-year.
FRA's accumulated maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) increased by 1.2 percent to almost 2.56 million metric tons - a new August record. MTOWs have climbed by some 5.7 percent this year to date. Aircraft movements rose by 1.4 percent to 42,212 takeoffs and landings. From January to August 2011 aircraft movements grew by 5.3 percent.
In contrast, a softening of the airfreight segment can be seen. Although the cumulative airfreight volume for January-to-August 2011 reached the same level as last year, tonnage for the reporting month dropped by 7.0 percent to 172,415 metric tons. "One has to take into account that the airfreight segment - following the finance and economic crisis of 2010 - has been characterized by very strong growth rates. Thus, Frankfurt Airport's airfreight volume of 2.23 million metric tons in 2010 clearly exceeded the pre-crisis levels during the years 2007 to 2009," said Fraport AG executive board chairman Dr. Stefan Schulte, commenting on the latest traffic results.
The Fraport Group's majority-owned airports continued to report steady traffic growth in the reporting month. Including FRA, the Group airports served a total of 11.1 million passengers in August 2011 - up 6.6 percent year-on-year.
Several airports in the Group recorded very positive growth. Some 3.7 million passengers used Antalya Airport (AYT) in the Turkish Riviera, representing a gain of 9.4 percent year-on-year. Peru's Lima Airport (LIM) saw passenger traffic exceed 1.1 million in August 2011, a double-digit increase of 15.6 percent. At Fraport's Bulgarian Black Sea airports, Burgas (BOJ) jumped by 13.8 percent to about 645,000 passengers, while Varna (VAR) grew by 1.7 percent to approximately 298,000 passengers.
Combined, the Fraport Group majority-owned airports served 65.5 million passengers during the first eight months of 2011 - an increase of 10.1 percent year-on-year.
