Frost & Sullivan Acclaims Bluestar Silicones for Achieving Excellence in Product Differentiation
- Bluestar Silicones Silbione RT foam lauded for its unique design, advanced physical properties and outstanding biocompatibility
LONDON, Nov. 12, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Based on its recent analysis of silicones in healthcare applications, Frost & Sullivan recognises Bluestar Silicones with the 2012 European Product Differentiation Excellence Award.
"Bluestar Silicones Silbione RT foam uses a patent pending technology for manufacturing silicone foam with advanced physical properties, such as lower density, higher flexibility and superior breathability," noted Frost & Sullivan Vice President, Shomik Majumdar. "This solution is unique; it offers biocompatibility levels absent in most competitor products manufactured using other technologies."
The Silbione RT foam is an elastomeric foam made from a two component silicone system cured at room temperature. The viscosities of the two parts used for a crosslinking reaction have been reduced to almost one third that of competing products. This allows ease of processing.
According to Research Analyst, Tridisha Goswami, Silbione silicone foams can be customised to fit specific OEM requirements. The hardness, flexibility and density of the polymer can be customised and changed within a particular range by controlling the process reaction. Also, the open cells structure can be customised for fluid management and breathability of the foam. These are possible due to the ability to control the reaction kinetics of the foaming and curing reaction.
"This chemistry management helps in altering the physical properties of the foam to suit a range of healthcare applications," remarked Goswami. "Therefore, applications like wound care, which require flexibility and breathability to enhance patient comfort, can use silicone foam customised for the purpose."
The product's high biocompatibility ensures that patients do not suffer from toxicity, skin irritation and sensitisation. The open cells of the elastomers help in fluid management and breathability of the material and allow the passage of body fluids and moisture vapour.
The low density reduces the cost per unit volume for OEMs and makes the end products light in weight and comfortable. The ability to control hardness aids in pressure management for OEMs. These properties ensure extra comfort for patients.
"The elastomer is also resistant to weathering, washing and can be subjected to some sterilisation processes that are usually required in healthcare applications," stated Goswami. "The flexibility translates to safety and comfort for patients and ease of design for OEMs. Also, the high thermal insulation characteristics of the silicone foam helps in expanding its applications."
The properties of being light weight, flexible and resistant to weathering make it an ideal product for use in home care medical devices, which are the need of the moment. Also, the stability of the two part system helps increase the shelf life to one year, which makes it a superior product.
Frost & Sullivan presents this award to the company that has demonstrated excellence in developing product(s) with unique features/functionality, superior quality/complexity and that support customisation. The ability to effectively target market needs and the brand perception of the uniqueness of the product(s) also underlie the receipt of this award.
Frost & Sullivan Best Practices awards recognise companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis, and extensive secondary research to identify best practices in the industry.
