Energy Company Takes Top Spot;
Nearly Half of Brits Cite Work-Life Balance as Major Factor in Job Search
LONDON, Aug. 16, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Glassdoor, one of the world's largest job and recruiting sites, today revealed Newcastle-based Northern Gas and Power as the highest rated company for work-life balance in the UK. The top 20 winners are ranked based on their overall work-life balance rating from UK employees1.
A recent Glassdoor survey2 among UK adults (currently employed or looking for work) highlights that offering good work-life balance is a key factor for enticing job seekers at application stage. When asked what would make Brits more likely to apply for a job at a company, nearly half of UK workers/job seekers (48 percent) cited a convenient commute followed closely by offering a good work-life balance (47 percent). "While tech companies get a lot of attention for offering amazing perks and handsome salaries, these results indicate that it's the non-tech businesses which provide UK employees with the best levels of work-life balance," said John Lamphiere, Glassdoor's Managing Director, EMEA. "If you want to attract quality talent you need to be able to provide flexible working conditions and have a management team open to the idea of their employees working from home. We know that a good work-life balance is important to UK job seekers, so being a workplace where it's valued can be a serious recruiting advantage."

- Methodology: For a company to be considered in Glassdoor's report, Highest Rated Companies for Work-Life Balance 2018, a minimum of 80 work-life balance ratings must have been submitted on Glassdoor by UK-based employees as of 12/7/18. For reporting simplicity, ratings are rounded to one decimal place though actual calculations extend beyond the thousandth decimal place to determine rank. Academic institutions such as universities are excluded from these rankings.
- The job seeker preferences survey was conducted online within the UK by The Harris Poll on behalf of Glassdoor between 7-9 May, 2018 among 715 UK adults ages 18+ who are employed full-time/part-time/self-employed, or not employed but looking for work. This online survey is not based on a probability sample and therefore no estimate of theoretical sampling error can be calculated. Read the full study here.
