Goodman to Develop an Approx. 110,000 sqm Logistics Centre for Amazon in Rheinberg, Germany
RHEINBERG, Germany, February 28, 2011 /PRNewswire/ --
Goodman Group today announced that it has signed a contract with Amazon, one of the world's leading online e-commerce providers, to develop an approx. 110,000 sqm logistics centre in Rheinberg, Germany (near Duisburg). Amazon plans to create up to 1,000 long term jobs in Rheinberg. This latest transaction underlines Goodman's position as the market leader in the development of logistics real estate in Germany.
The new Rheinberg development builds on Goodman's established relationship with Amazon and is the fifth such facility to be developed on behalf of Amazon in Europe.
The logistics centre will provide approx. 110,000 sqm of storage space and office space. The construction work will commence in early March.
Allan Lyall, Vice President of European Operations at Amazon said: "We are delighted to open a new fulfillment centre in Rheinberg. The central geographical location in Europe, access to a great employment base, and the excellent connection to all major highways as well as the good collaboration with the city of Rheinberg are the main reasons for selecting this location. The property in Rheinberg is now the fifth logistics centre that Goodman has developed for Amazon in Europe, three of which are in Germany. Our collaboration also includes project developments in Orleans, France and Swansea in Wales."
Goodman acquired 317,000 sqm of land in Rheinberg with good linkage to the A 57 motorway as well as a possible rail connection. The remaining land at the site is available for further development. In addition to the Herten development site, Rheinberg is Goodman's second major venture in the Ruhr area, one of the most dynamic logistics hubs in Germany.
Hans-Theo Mennicken, Lord Mayor of Rheinberg, said: "This development by Goodman represents a real boost to the image of Rheinberg and is a major step forward in our efforts to establish the 'Rheinberg brand'. I am particularly pleased by the fact that the decision to locate in Rheinberg will offer secure jobs to a range of people from the entire region."
Andreas Fleischer, Goodman Country Manager Germany said: "We have worked together successfully with Amazon for many years, and this is currently one of the largest real estate developments being undertaken in Europe."
"The project demonstrates the trust that our customers have in our expertise in the growing market of e-commerce fulfillment. Our ability to turn industry-specific requirements into tailor-made real estate solutions has made us the leading developer in the logistics real estate sector, and this project will further enhance our market reputation."
"The total amount of warehouse space now under development by Goodman in Germany is 233,500 sqm, corresponding to an investment value of 135 million euro," he said.
