Huawei Accomplishes the Multivendor GSM-R Integration for the ETCS L2 Project of the EKB High Speed Railway Line in Turkey
SHANGHAI, Aug. 15 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, today announced that it has successfully completed the full set of GSM-R Interoperability Tests (IOT) with the core network of Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) and Huawei Base Station Subsystem for the Turkish GSM-R railway project under Turkey's EKB High Speed Railway Line. The completion of the multivendor GSM-R integration is an important project milestone for the Eskisehir-Alayunt-Kutahya-Balikesir (EKB) European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) Line, where Alstom, a world leader in systems, equipment and services in the railway sector, had selected Huawei to design and implement the telecom, GSM-R and telephony components of the project. This integrated GSM-R multivendor network will become the latest demonstration of successful testing and implementation of Huawei GSM-R equipment in the global GSM-R market.
GSM-R is the globally recognized wireless railway communication system used by railways to safely deliver operational voice and data communication between train, ground and non-rail operational staff. Stringent GSM-R specifications and equipment guidelines enable railways globally to setup multivendor systems such as the one now fully integrated for the EKB High Speed line.
The EKB High Speed line consists of a large number of network elements, chosen from various vendors for their special designs that perfectly fit the needs of the project. "Thanks to the strong GSM-R interface specifications, such multivendor GSM-R networks are possible and can be delivered in a controlled and timely manner. The Eskisehir-Alayunt-Kutahya-Balikesir project in Turkey is yet another example where GSM-R standards, test specifications and published GSM-R test catalogues are proven to be the right tools to ensure commercial profitability of multivendor GSM-R solutions," said Mr. Erhan Yavuzarslan, Project Manager of Huawei Turkey.
The latest successful delivery of Huawei GSM-R multivendor equipment reflects the long-standing commitment to transportation-focused research and development within the company. The innovation behind the technology has also been subject to a series of rigorous internal and external audits and integration tests performed with third party vendors, rail customers of Huawei and through independent notified bodies such as Lloyds and TUV to ensure complete compliance with EIRENE specifications.
Huawei is a long-standing contributor to the development of multivendor GSM-R equipment, having actively instigated extensive interoperability campaigns with many of the key global stakeholders for GSM-R equipment since 2005. A prior example includes the 142km long Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong railway line that operates at 350km/h. For this project Huawei provided a GSM-R wireless trunking solution with full redundancy and certification to ensure highest design standards under complex coverage scenarios. Also Huawei BSS perfectly interoperates with NSN's core network which jointly delivers a CTCS-3 (coherent to ETCS L2) service to the high speed trains operating on this line.
The Turkish project, with a total length of 464 km, will be equipped with an ETCS L2 train control system from Alstom allowing Turkey to continue their impressive rollout of a modern railway communication network with improved rail operational efficiency.
As a well-established GSM-R vendor, Huawei has achieved 61% market share in the overseas GSM-R market in 2012 by new contract awards and its GSM-R solution has been deployed along 14,000 km railway lines worldwide today.
