Huawei Collaborates with Vodafone Germany to Provide Seamless Live Broadcasting of the Kieler Woche with eLTE Technology
BERLIN, July 28, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Huawei, a leading information and communications technology (ICT) provider, announced that its eLTE solution contributed to the success of the Kieler Woche, an annual international sailing event held in Kiel, Germany. During the event in June, Huawei worked with Vodafone Germany to provide an eLTE-based broadband communications network to enable smooth video transmission and seamless live video broadcasting.
"Setting up the Kieler Woche's broadband communications network was the first application of eLTE in Germany and demonstrated the successful integration of Huawei's eLTE solution and an operator's LTE solution," said David Xu, General Manager of Enterprise wireless domain, Huawei. "With Vodafone Germany, we have created an example for the ICT industry that will contribute to the development of LTE wireless broadband technology across Europe. The project has provided us and the industry with first-hand experience in the deployment of commercial LTE TDD and LTE FDD hybrid networks."
Founded in 1882, Kieler Woche is one of the world's largest sailing events and brings together the champions of the Sailing World Cup and Olympic Games. Each year more than 5,000 sailors and 3,000 sailing boats gather to compete in more than forty races. Sixteen of the races are from national and international sailing events, while ten races are from the Olympic Games.
During the event, it was crucial to establish stable transmissions from the competing boats to provide live footage of the races. Traditional Wi-Fi networks are unstable at sea and it was difficult for the filming crew to capture footage near the competing boats. However, based on LTE technology, Huawei's eLTE solution enabled the organizers to set up two DBS3900 distributed base stations across the race course where footage of the race was captured using smart phones and transmitted to the event organizer via the eLTE network. The footage was then transmitted to mobile phones and tablets in the audience stand via an enhanced Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (eMBMS) that was supported by Vodafone Germany's LTE carrier network.
As of the second quarter of 2014, Huawei has signed more than 61 eLTE network contracts and launched 19 commercial eLTE networks. Of the eLTE contracts, 31 were signed with governments, 10 with the transportation industry, 6 with the electricity and power industry, 5 with the energy industry, and 9 with the Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP) industries.
In Europe, Huawei has deployed the world's first offshore LTE network that provides broadband communications services to Tampnet's oil field within a 37 kilometer radius in Norway. In an effort to help close the digital gap, Huawei has also worked with IB-RED in Spain to deploy and launch Europe's first 4G broadband network for people and enterprises in rural areas. Users of IB-RED's services can access the Internet at 40Mbits, which is on par with the speed of internet connections in urban areas. Huawei will continue to adopt an integrated approach, work closely with customers and partners, and provide competitive and customized end-to-end solutions to promote the development of value chains across multiple vertical industries.
