Huawei Helps Build High-Performance Hyper-V Network Virtualization Gateway for Windows Server 2012 -- New Development in SDN Technology
NEW ORLEANS, June 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Huawei, a world-leading information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, announced that Huawei has been cooperating with Microsoft in the software defined network (SDN) domain, to successfully implement the Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V Network Virtualization function on CE12800 data center switches. This function allows the CE12800 to work as a Hyper-V Network Virtualization gateway to overcome challenges of network virtualization.
"Windows Server 2012 innovations in SDN such as Hyper-V Network Virtualization help enterprises cloud-optimize IT. Huawei's Hyper-V Network Virtualization gateway, gives virtualized networks and traditional networks communications capabilities that are key in multi-tenant environments," said Mike Schutz, General Manager, Server and Tools Marketing, Microsoft.
At Microsoft's TechED North America 2013, Huawei launched the Hyper-V Network Virtualization gateway product and solution. The commercial product will be available in the 4th quarter of 2013.
As data center server virtualization technology becomes more popular, live virtual machine (VM) migration requires a large Layer 2 network, and massive tenants need to be supported in hybrid cloud and public cloud data centers. Traditional networks cannot meet these requirements. In response, Network Virtualization over Layer 3 (NVO3) technologies were introduced to meet such requirements by allowing customers to deploy gateway devices without requiring changes to the existing network, thereby minimizing additional investments for customers. Huawei has been in collaboration with Microsoft to develop Hyper-V Network Virtualization gateways.
Traditional software conversion is characterized by low efficiency and poor performance. To improve on this situation, Huawei developed the NVGRE packet forwarding module on CE12800 switches for NVGRE packet encapsulation/decapsulation, to enhance high-performance Hyper-V Networks Virtualization gateways. These gateways implement Layer 3 interconnections between Hyper-V Network Virtualization VMs in data centers and campus network users. Moreover, the Microsoft cloud management platform, System Center 2012, can directly manage CE12800 switches through Huawei-developed plug-ins, thereby effectuating unified device management.
Huawei also cooperates with other well-known Internet enterprises in the SDN field, such as Tencent and Alibaba. As SDN technologies continue to develop, Huawei will continue to provide service-oriented SDN architectures, enabling networks to provide services able to fulfill customer needs.
