IBC2013 Celebrates 100 Years of Indian Cinema in an Exclusive, Free to Attend Conference Convention Keynote
LONDON, Aug. 29, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- IBC today announces the IBC2013 Convention Keynote that will take place on Friday 13 September at 09:30, at the RAI Amsterdam. This exclusive and exciting session, titled "100 Years of Indian Cinema: Creative Evolution and Global Markets" will feature a star-studded and action-packed review of the brilliant, diverse and extraordinary living history of Indian Cinema and will star Amitabh Bachchan, widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential actors in the history of Indian cinema. To mark the occasion, IBC is offering this session for FREE to all IBC attendees.
On 3 May, 1913, Dadasheb Phalke's film 'Raja Harishchandra' was released. One hundred years on, IBC is celebrating the anniversary – and 100 years of Indian cinema – with a dedicated convention keynote session.
The whole rich tapestry that is Indian cinema will be reviewed – and viewed – in this exclusive Convention Keynote, which will be open and free to all attendees to IBC2013. Along with clips from the last hundred years showing that the industry is much more than Bollywood, there will be discussion from top figures in today's Indian cinema, featuring Amitabh Bachchan, the biggest superstar in Indian cinema today and perhaps of all time; Ashi Dua, the talented producer of 'Bombay Talkies' and session chair Mohinder Walia, Managing Director of Mumbai Media City, India's largest Studio, Broadcast, Content Management and Media School facility.
IBC is delighted to welcome two of Indian cinemas greatest stars. Starting out in the 1970s playing angry young man, Amitabh Bachchan has appeared in more than 180 movies: the French Director Francois Truffaut once called him "a one-man industry". His fame has spread beyond India, taking an important role in the 2013 film 'The Great Gatsby'. Ashi Dua is the producer of 'Bombay Talkies', the official tribute to the first 100 years of Indian cinema. She is one of the new breed of producers and is keen to emphasise that there is much more to Indian cinema than music and glamour but deep and dark drama, too.
Chairing the session will be Mohinder Walia, Managing Director of Mumbai Media City, which is India's largest Hollywood-benchmarked facility right in the heart of Mumbai city. Mohinder also founded Golden Bird Entertainment, a Film and TV production company with feet in both Mumbai and Los Angeles.
The IBC2013 Conference Convention Keynote session will take place at 09:30 on Friday 13 September. Together, the panellists will discuss an industry which today sees a staggering 1,000 films released each year. 2012's $2.6 billion box office receipts are expected to grow by more than 20% a year to 2017.
"There are certain set perceptions about Indian Cinema, beyond Indian shores," said Bachchan. "The truth is that it is the breadth of styles and genres that makes the Indian cinema industry so vibrant and so culturally exciting. I am delighted to have been invited to take part in IBC2013, a global event at which we can share our knowledge, our experiences and our enthusiasm with our peers from all around the world."
"The stature of the Indian cinema cannot be understated," said Michael Lumley, Chair of the IBC Conference Committee. "Its productions are diverse, its audiences are huge and its ambitions massive. In technology and creativity it is a fascinating powerhouse and I am delighted that we can mark the 100th anniversary with what I am sure will be a fascinating, informative and – dare I say it – glamorous session, with some of the top stars on stage."
IBC is also honouring 100 years of Indian cinema with its Judges' Prize, which will be presented as part of the IBC Awards Ceremony. The judging panel of leading editors and commentators from around the world chose this special anniversary for its unique award this year. The Awards Ceremony is also open to all IBC visitors. It takes place in the Auditorium on Sunday 15 September at 18.30.
