Platinum-selling singer songwriter James Walsh played an exclusive 'secret gig' as part of premium fan-to-fan ticket marketplace StubHub UK's #gigenvy campaign on Wednesday 21st May 2014. The former Starsailor frontman celebrated the dawn of his new solo career by giving fans an intimate performance at alternative radio station Absolute Radio's headquarters in Golden Square, London.
Fans had applied via competitions on social and radio. The artist, who has sold over three million records worldwide and achieved two top 10 albums with post Britpop rock group Starsailor in the 2000s, performed a selection of tracks from his new solo album Turning Point. The star also treated fans to stripped back versions of classic Starsailor hits, including European number one single 'Four to the Floor'.
Following the exclusive concert, Walsh took part in a Q&A session with Absolute DJ Sarah Champion during which he answered questions from StubHub users, revealing that his music idol is Bruce Springsteen and his first concert had been the Boo Radleys. The best advice he had for young musicians was: "Don't take yourself too seriously and be confident in your own sound - don't cater to trends."
Many fans had only discovered they had won a coveted space at the concert that morning with one fan, Donna Willison, having travelled up from Slough to see one of her favourite performers live. She said: "My first ever gig was a Starsailor concert so I am massively excited to be here. When you hear his voice, you just know it is James Walsh."
The event was the second installment of six secret summer gigs organised by StubHub UK as part of their #gigenvy campaign. StubHub UK has partnered with popular radio stations including Magic FM, Absolute Radio and Kiss FM to present the series of intimate concerts, which feature huge international acts as well as upcoming artists.
Richard Griffiths, Interim European Head of Communications at StubHub, commented:
"We're delighted to be partnering with James Walsh and Absolute Radio to host his VIP live and intimate London gig. At StubHub, the fan experience is what matters to us and partnering with Absolute Radio has allowed us to put on the ultimate gig for James' fans.
"It's all about giving fans great seats available right up until the start of a gig, and making the experience unforgettable for them - we want people to get the gig tickets they want, not gig envy!"
The campaign seeks to inform music lovers on how to get better access to tickets for live entertainment events, so they can get up close and personal with their favourite stars. Those keen to get their hands on free VIP passes can tune into the radio stations or follow @StubHubUK on Twitter for more information.
