The automotive industry remains an important part of Japan's economy. Carmakers and automotive suppliers together employ over 5.3 million workers, which is equivalent to 8.5% of the country's total workforce. The industry generates 10% of the country's tax revenues and makes up 15% of the manufacturing sector, which generates roughly 20% of Japan's GDP. However, Japan's automotive industry is facing many pressures to remain competitive, a struggle which will inevitably produce a mixture of both winners and losers.
Domestic manufacturing, including the Japanese automotive sector, is still reeling from the Great East Japan Earthquake. Exports are being hampered by the appreciation of the yen, which is forcing carmakers to shift production overseas and quickening the pace of overseas investments by suppliers. The ageing population in Japan will begin to impact demand for vehicles domestically and Japanese carmakers are also facing increased competition from Asian companies, especially South Korean carmakers and suppliers. This makes the current business environment and future outlook for Japanese suppliers increasingly difficult. It will therefore be interesting to see how companies will overcome these hurdles and address these issues they are facing, to remain profitable, as well as competitive.
