The KING SKYFRONT was launched by Kawasaki City in 2013 as a base for scholars, industrialists and government administrators to work together to devise real life solutions to global issues in the life sciences and environment.

KING SKYFRONT is a 40 hectare area located in the Tonomachi area of the Keihin Industrial Region that spans Tokyo and Kanagawa Prefecture and Tokyo International Airport (Haneda Airport) and an important initiative in establishing the Tonomachi area of Kawasaki City as Asia's Silicon Valley.

The National Institute of Health Sciences or "Kokuritsueiken" was established in 1874. It has the longest history out of all national research institutes. In early Meiji era, when the introduction of western medicine became widespread, many bad drugs came into Japan. Therefore, the government of the time established the "Tokyo Medicines Control Laboratory" to chemically analyze and examine medicines with advice from Anton Johannes Cornelis Geerts, a Dutch pharmacologist who brought in from overseas. This is the origin of our institute.
