LONDON and NEW YORK, October 12, 2018 /PRNewswire/ --

Lehigh Technologies' entry for its innovative approach to end-of-life tyre recycling using cryogenic grinding of tyre rubber to produce micronised rubber powder (MRP), also won the category for Innovation with Best Benefit to Environment or Sustainability, sponsored by US chemical distributor Maroon Group.
MRP, marketed by Lehigh as PolyDyne and Microdyne, can be used in the manufacture of new tyres, as well as other high-performance rubber products, and thus enables the move towards the circular economy in the tyre industry. The material, with carefully controlled particle size, has already been used in the manufacture of over 500m new tyres.
The innovation was judged the clear winner by the panel of five leading industry innovation experts. The judges commented on its commercial success in the market, the scale of the benefits it offers and the fact that the product has been engineered in an easy-to-use form.
The ICIS Innovation Awards, sponsored overall by BASF (www.basf.com) and with category sponsorship from Maroon Group, (www.maroongroupllc.com), ExxonMobil Chemical (www.exxonmobilchemical.com) and Accenture (www.accenture.com), recognise outstanding technological and business innovation in the global chemical industry.
OTHER WINNERS IN THE ICIS INNOVATION AWARDS THIS YEAR WERE:
Best Product Innovation - sponsored by Accenture
Stora Enso - Repurposing lignin as a renewable replacement for fossil-based materials
Best Process Innovation
Galaxy Surfactants - Green process for the manufacture of amino acid surfactants
Best Innovation by an SME - sponsored by ExxonMobil Chemical
Electrochem Technologies & Materials - Electrowinning iron from copperas: a zero-carbon iron-making process
John Baker, ICIS editor and organiser of the Awards, commented that: "This year's entries led to the creation of a strong short-list of entries. The judging discussion as ever was very robust but in the end Lehigh Technologies was a clear winner overall, although Stora Enso's lignin innovation also impressed the judges.
"As in previous years, the innovations before the judges showcased a wide range of excellent products and processes, with the potential to make important impacts in their respective markets and reduce environmental impacts. This year, the theme of sustainability and the circular economy was clearly evident across all the entries, and emerged very strongly in the shortlist of entries for final adjudication.
"All the winners demonstrate not only that innovation is well and truly alive in the chemical industry but that this innovation brings benefits not only to companies and their customers but the environment as well. And it helps the sustainability of the business of chemicals."
