Leipzig to Commemorate 25th Anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution in 2014
LEIPZIG, Germany, December 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
The year 2014 will see the 25th anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution. The highlight of the celebrations in Leipzig will be a Festival of Lights on 9 October 2014 that brings history to life along the historic demonstration route with audio, video and light installations. The organisers expect tens of thousands of national and international guests. The Leipzig Festival of Lights marks the start of a long weekend, where numerous cultural institutions dedicate their events, exhibitions and concerts to the system-changing occurrences of 1989. http://www.leipzig.travel, http://www.herbst89.de
25 years ago, on 9 October 1989, after prayers for peace in St. Nicholas Church and three other Leipzig churches, about 70,000 people gathered with candles in their hands, despite a threatening firing order, to demonstrate for more freedom in the GDR. The demonstrations remained peaceful and became an important milestone on the way to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the German reunification.
All year round, visitors can follow in the traces of those events and visit authentic sites like the Stasi museum (Museum in der Runden Ecke). Right in the former offices of the Stasi employees, visitors can now inform themselves about Stasi's function, methods and history. The former Stasi bunker outside Leipzig is open to visitors the last weekend of every month. http://www.runde-ecke-leipzig.de
The Forum of Contemporary History Leipzig's interactive exhibition illustrates the history of division and unification, dictatorship and resistance in the Soviet occupied zone and the GDR. http://www.hdg.de
Today, Leipzig counts among the most dynamic and trendiest cities in Germany, if not Europe - with international media heralding it as "the new Berlin".
