ÍSAFJÖRÐUR, Iceland, April 6, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --
I Never Went South music festival will play live to a global audience on inspiredbyiceland.com
The biggest names in Icelandic music will head to Iceland's Westfjords to perform at the I Never Went South Festival / ALDREI FÓR ÉG SUÐUR music festival on the 6th and 7th April 2012 and everyone's invited.
The festival will be broadcast live across the globe on inspiredbyiceland.com from the remote town of Ísafjörður; a vibrant community tucked away in the mountains of North West Iceland.
Having hosted the event since its inception in 2004, the town is no stranger to the festival scene and this year's line-up will feature some of the biggest names in Icelandic music right now, including Sykur, Muck, Retro Stefson, Skálmöld, Mugison, Klysja, Dúkkulísur, Pollapönk, Guðrið Hansdóttir, Jón Jónsson and plenty more. A full list of performers can be found here (http://aldrei.is).
The idea behind the festival was dreamt up by Icelander and talented musician Mugison during a chat with his father over a pint of beer in a London pub. As natives of Ísafjörður, they wanted to showcase some of the town's eclectic musical acts, with some of the country's more famous musicians serving as supporting acts, whilst drawing on the town's vibrant spirit and community.
The name of the festival pays homage to those musicians who resisted running south to Reykjavik to pursue fame and fortune and instead stayed in their hometowns to create a more interesting and inspiring sound.
The festival has become ingrained in the culture of Ísafjörður with the residents both hosting and running the event for free, meaning there is no charge for admission for the 6,000 revellers who flock to the town every year to hear local music played by local musicians.
An essential part of every festival is the fierce debate over which band gave the most inspiring performance and we're inviting the whole world to join in. Inspired by Iceland will host the live debate and will be asking the world to pick the most inspiring act from the festival this year. Everyone involved will be entered into a competition to win a trip to Iceland and get to meet their favorite acts at a live gig later this year.
This will be the second year in a row that Inspired by Iceland will be streaming the event live on their website, inviting an audience from around the world to watch the most talented Icelandic musicians. In fact the festival was named one of the three most interesting things in the world by Lonely Planet in their Best of Travel round up.
