Low CL Quartz Crystal for Ultra Low Power Microcontroller
NEU-ISENBERG, Germany, August 29, 2011 /PRNewswire/ --
Recent developments of microcontroller manufacturers have produced remarkable series of Ultra Low Power Microcontrollers that are optimized for operation from a battery in a portable system. Additional energy saving can be achieved with implementation of stand-by operation with reduced oscillation frequency, prevalent 32 KHz clock frequency. It permits intermitting operation with full nominal frequency in normal operation and the significantly lower 32 KHz stand-by frequency, sufficient to run Watch-Dog-Timer (WDT), Real-Time-Clocks (RTC) and similar equipment, with current requirements of only 0.7microA or even less. This permits long battery life times, up to years. The target for power reduction during stand-by (<0.7microA at 1.8V) made Seiko Instruments to put efforts in the development of tuning fork quartz crystals with current consumption of 0.1microA or less at 1.8V supply voltage. Results of the efforts are the so called "Low CL" Quartz products which are dedicated to the use with Ultra Low Power Microcontrollers.
Actual "Low CL" quartz crystals are offered in two different packages. The physical parameters are identical for both representations. The resonance frequency is 32.768 KHz, load capacitance is selectable from 6pF, 4.4pF or 3.7pF and the frequency tolerance is +/- 20ppm.
The VT-200-FL quartz crystal is accommodated in a 2.0mm x 6.0mm Aluminium Tube and has radial connection wires.
The SSP-T7-FL quartz crystal has an SMD plastic package with the dimensions 7.0mm x 1.5mm x 1.4mm.
A cooperation agreement between RENESAS ELECTRONICS and Seiko Instruments has led to mutual referring in data sheets, matching reports and on their websites. The "Low CL" part of Seiko Instruments website contains matching reports with RENESAS Ultra Low Power Microcontrollers with tips regarding the Layout. It also contains entries for matching with microcontrollers of other manufacturers e.g. Fujitsu, Intel. OKI, Panasonic, Ricoh, Sanyo, TI, Toshiba
