MediaTek Teams with Amazon on New Fire HD Tablets
- MT8135 and MT6628 SoCs enable powerful 6" and 7" tablets available for under $150; also power new Fire HD Kids Edition
HSINCHU, Oct. 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- MediaTek continues its global spread of powerful chipsets in mainstream devices by announcing today that it is working with Amazon to help power the new line of Fire tablets - the Fire HD 6, Fire HD 7 and Fire HD Kids Edition. These new tablets feature MediaTek's MT8135 System on Chip (SoC) and MT6628 connectivity solution and are designed for consumers looking for high-performance devices at an affordable price. MediaTek has named this new and emerging marketplace as the "Super-mid market."
Based on ARM's big.LITTLE™ multiprocessing technology, MediaTek MT8135 gives the new Fire HD tablets Super-Quad technology - two high-performance ARM Cortex-A15 and two energy-efficient Cortex-A7 processors. Capable of being used in any combination, MT8135 draws the best balance between high performance and battery life, even for the most processor-intensive applications. MT8135 also features Imagination Technologies PowerVR Series6 graphics for a console-like gaming experience, support for rich camera features and full HD 1080p displays.
"Drawing from its strengths in mobile technologies and multimedia capabilities, MediaTek was able to provide Amazon with a premium chipset solution that provides an exceptional user experience," said Joe Chen, General Manager of MediaTek's Home Entertainment business unit. "Engineers from each company collaborated to integrate our chipsets into Amazon's amazing devices and we're proud to see them reach the market now."
The new Fire HD tablets also include MediaTek's MT6628 connectivity chipset - a low power mobile WiFi and Bluetooth combination in a single integrated circuit. It provides reliable high performance WiFi connectivity for Internet browsing and streaming content. It also provides Bluetooth low energy (BTLE), the latest Bluetooth standard to connect to headphones, keyboards and other peripherals while extending battery life.
The new Fire HD tablets are currently available for purchase globally and come in two sizes - 6" for $99 and 7" for $139. The Fire HD Kids Edition is $149 for a 6" tablet and $189 for a 7" tablet.
