MotorQuoteDirect Looks at Car Maintenance Tips
LONDON, February 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
Car owners should take advantage of the brighter starts and longer days that we are beginning to have by making sure that their car is properly maintained, in between the car's annual service and MOT. MotorQuoteDirect, a car insurance company, looks at a few maintenance tips for cars.
Looking after your car is beneficial to both safety and financial stability and getting it serviced is the best way to avoid problems. Most modern cars need little attention between services, but there are a few things owners can do to help. Mark Hare, Bedford Insurance's Managing Director, says "Even though modern cars need little maintenance, owners should double check their manual to see how often certain things need changing, to avoid expensive trips to the garage."
One of the most common checks that car owners will need to look at is the health of their tyres. Mark explains, "The depth of the tyre tread is important because it's the only part of the vehicle that grips the road, therefore having a low tread will reduce control of the car."
Having the correct tyre pressure is also important as low pressure tyres can wear out quicker and can make the car consume more petrol.
Mark explains that checking the oil is another step that owners should do, he says, "The oil keeps the hardworking engine parts cool and running smoothly. Before you take a road trip, make sure you check the oil before you head off, as the engine is likely to overheat on longer trips, especially over the summer."
Car owners should also check all of the fluid levels including the engine coolant, brake fluid levels and windscreen washer fluids. The engine coolant helps remove excess heat from the car's engine to prevent it overheating, whilst the brake fluid is a vital part of transferring the force when the driver hits the brake pedals. Mark says, "These simple checks can cost a lot when using a mechanic, so it's definitely worth drivers running these basic checks themselves."
If owners are lucky enough to own a new car, it's worth remembering that the vehicle is covered by a three year or more warranty. Mark recommends that if something is wrong, then take it back to the dealer, before phoning your car insurance company to check if it can be fixed under their insurance policy. The warranty covers the car, not just to the original buyer, so it can be used even if you haven't had the car from new.
