Nation's Extreme Weather to be Tackled in Cross-party Debate at Ecobuild
LONDON, February 16, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --
MPs from the main political parties will join former deputy PM Lord John Prescott on 4th March 2015 to tackle the nation's risk from rising extreme weather, asking: Is it time for a national disaster resilience plan?
With floods in the UK estimated to cost £1.2bn, where does the responsibility lie for protecting our cities and booming population? Should insurance companies continue to pick up the bill, or do we need an overhaul of government policy to provide better defences?
BBC Environment Analyst Roger Harrabin will chair this vital discussion during Ecobuild (http://www.ecobuild.co.uk); the world's largest event for sustainable design, construction and energy (London's ExCeL, 3rd to 5th March 2015).
The line-up includes:
- Rt. Hon. Oliver Letwin MP, Minister for Government Policy and Chancellor of Duchy of Lancaster
- Maria Eagle MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA)
- Baroness Parminter, Liberal Democrat Member of the House of Lords and Co-Chair of the DEFRA/DECC Parliamentary Party Committee
- Robin Smale, Committee Member, Natural Capital Committee; and Director, Vivid Economics
- Professor Michael Depledge, Chair of Environment and Human Health, University of Exeter Medical School
Discussion will centre upon the need for a properly funded long term national environmental resilience plan linked to a national infrastructure and ask: What should this look like and can the money be made available?
