LAUSANNE and ROMONT, Switzerland, April 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
Nestlé Nespresso SA today marked the beginning of construction of its third production centre in Romont, Switzerland, before representatives of the canton of Fribourg and the commune. The new facility builds on the company's presence in the country and its two existing production centres in Orbe and Avenches. It will be operational in the first half of 2015.
« More than laying the foundation of a new building, this day represents the concretisation of a major project in the company's strategy. Initiated four years ago and carried by the continuous energy and determination of our teams and partners, this third production centre marks our confidence in our business model and in our future," said Jean-Marc Duvoisin, CEO of Nestlé Nespresso SA. « It is an investment in our coffee expertise and quality, two pillars for the sustainable growth of our company moving forward. »
To mark the beginning of the construction works, Jean-Marc Duvoisin unveiled a symbolic first stone: a giant coffee bean made of the aluminium from approximately 800 Nespresso capsules. Conceived by Jérôme Berbier, an artist and designer from Fribourg, this sculpture evokes the primary source of inspiration for Nespresso and foreshadows the future role of the production centre in the development of the company.
A strategic investment for long term development
Nearly 27 years after pioneering the portioned coffee segment, Nespresso continues to be sought after by an increasing number of consumers looking for coffees and experiences of exceptional quality.
« This site will allow us to meet the growing demand of consumers around the world for Nespresso coffees, » said Patrice Bula, Executive Vice President of Nestlé SA, responsible for the Strategic Business Units, Marketing, Sales and Chairman of Nespresso. «It is a strategic, long-term investment that will allow us to support the future growth of Nespresso worldwide. »
Nespresso will invest more than 300 million Swiss francs in the construction of this new facility, which will have a surface area of around 21'000 m2.The architectural design of the project is led by Aubert Architectes.
A positive impact on the local economic landscape
With this future production centre, Nespresso intends to have a positive long-term impact on the economic and social landscape of the town of Romont and the canton of Fribourg.
This new site will create direct and indirect jobs in the region, while stimulating the local and regional economy. Nearly 200 skilled direct jobs will be created by the end of the first year of operation in 2015, reaching 400 by the end of 2016.
« This groundbreaking is an important step that marks the concrete implementation of Nespresso in the region. It is a strong signal of confidence in the economic development of our canton, and our shared focus on innovation and excellence, » declared Beat Vonlanthen, Minister of Economic Affairs in the canton of Fribourg.
« Romont and the district of Glâne are living the beginning of a new beneficial, flourishing and dynamic era with the arrival of Nespresso. I am truly convinced of that » said Roger Brodard, mayor of Romont.
A Swiss company with global reach, Nespresso chose to establish its third production centre in Romont due to the Swiss excellence and know-how, the solid and reliable infrastructure and a skilled workforce, all strategic factors that guarantee the quality that Nespresso stands for.
