Only 5% of Women are Sole Drivers of Motorhomes
LONDON, April 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
Comfort Insurance recently asked 140 people if it is a male, female or both genders that drive their motorhome. Surprisingly the results showed that only 5% of women solely drove their motorhome, compared to 51% that were men. Comfort Insurance looks at why it is very male dominated in the UK and how more female solo travellers can be encouraged to get involved.
Charlotte Davies, Comfort Insurance's Marketing Manager says, "We've seen that in the USA, single women over 50 are one of the fastest groups of motorhome buyers. The main reasons include being divorced, having more disposable income and the growing ageing population."
However, the recent stats from Comfort Insurance show that the female motorhome culture is not the same in the UK just yet.
In the USA where the motorhome/RV culture is huge, there are more meet-up groups, female RVer bloggers and dedicated websites to solo travellers.
Charlotte explains that she has met a handful of UK-based female motorhome owners who often arrange meet-ups through forums, although there is always a good mix of both singles and couples. She encourages more females to take the plunge into motorhome and campervan adventures.
Charlotte says, "When asking other women who love their motorhome trips, why they don't drive one, the main reason is confidence when driving and manoeuvring. However, there are motorhome manoeuvring courses available which will help build up assurance when on the roads."
After more confidence is built up, the next step is to meet like-minded people. Motorhome owners can find a club, join a forum or even bringing your pet dog along can be a great tool for meeting people. It can be daunting but is a chance to make new, lifelong friends.
Next is to plan your journey and locations to stop off at. Summer is a good time to start as there will be more people on the road and events going on across the country. There will be other people around who will be able to lend a hand if needed.
Charlotte says, "Hopefully we will start to see more females venturing out alone and enjoying time on the road in their motorhomes or campervans in the near future."
Comfort Insurance is an award-winning specialist motorhome insurance provider, and has been in the industry for over 20 years. They have a long-term relationship with Aviva, the UK's largest insurer and their motorhome insurance product is jointly developed with them.
