OpenFin Taps NodeSource To Enhance Container For Finance
Joe McCann, NodeSource CEO, joins OpenFin Industry Advisory Board
NEW YORK and LONDON, June 7, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- OpenFin today announced a partnership with NodeSource, the Enterprise Node Company ™, to further enhance OpenFin's market-leading HTML5 container for finance. NodeSource's expert engineers will become committers to OpenFin's open-source project, focusing on the security of Node.js which is embedded in OpenFin's Electron-based container. Joe McCann, CEO of NodeSource will join OpenFin's Industry Advisory Board which includes 13 of the world's largest financial institutions and trading platforms.
OpenFin's HTML5 container technology enables web applications to run outside-the-browser with native experience and desktop integration. 30 leading financial institutions and trading platforms now use OpenFin to deploy their flagship desktop applications to thousands of front-office users at 44 sell-side firms and over 250 buy-side firms. OpenFin is built on Electron, an open-source project which integrates Chromium, Google's open-source browser project, and Node.js, a JavaScript runtime built on Chrome's V8 JavaScript engine.
Mazy Dar, CEO of OpenFin, said: "The integration of Node.js in Electron presents both exciting opportunities and significant security challenges in a financial industry context. We are thrilled to be working with the world's leading experts at NodeSource to enable enterprise-grade use of Node.js within the OpenFin container."
Node.js enables unfettered access to the desktop operating system and automatic download of unverified third-party code at runtime, both of which create enormous security risks on financial desktops. OpenFin has eliminated these risks in consultation with a working group of leading financial industry architects by locking down Node.js. NodeSource's engineers, including JavaScript and Node veteran Patrick Mueller, will bring additional expertise to enable safe use of Node.js on the desktop by OpenFin-based applications.
Joe McCann, CEO of NodeSource said: "Security is paramount for financial industry applications and core to what we do at NodeSource. We are delighted to be working with OpenFin to help unlock the full power of Node.js on financial desktops."
