Philosys Reveals iPhone 5 innovation, Zoetic Awarded $10,000 Tech Prize and USCC Launches Cyber Competition
Philosys, Inc, a company involved in the development of medical diagnostic instruments, has announced a new product that will allow those with diabetes and other blood sugar related illnesses to monitor and record their blood glucose levels directly through Apple's new iPhone 5.
The Gmate SMART meter is currently available throughout the European Union, and its first users will be able to connect the device to their iPhone 5 using the phone's headphone jack, making it the first mobile blood glucose monitor in the world to not require a more expensive adaptor. The device is expected to receive FDA approval in the United States in the coming weeks, in addition to a worldwide patent.
Zoetic, a start-up specialising in digital safety devices, has been awarded a $10,000 prize by the GE / OMD Summer Incubator Program, an initiative created by General Electric and OMD worldwide to foster electronic innovation. The company was given the award after presenting its NOD driver safety device to a panel of marketing experts and venture capitalists at the end of the 10-week program, beating off strong competition from a number of other contestants.
The affordable NOD uses existing smartphone technology to make drivers aware of any unsafe actions they take; with co-founder Joe Adelmann stating that the product is the "safe driving tool for the 99%". Zoetic intends to expand its range of products in the near future, with plans to expand into 3D printing and mobile medical devices.
A new competition has been launched by the US Cyber Challenge Institute, aiming to encourage further learning in the field of national cyber security. The competition will require participants to complete a number of online tutorials and examinations designed to test their knowledge of cyber security, with the highest scoring entrants awarded with prizes and scholarships.
According to the director of the initiative, "the United States is facing a human capital crisis in the area of cyber security", and awareness-raising efforts like this competition are likely to increase the number of young people who wish to pursue a career in cyber security. At present, the institute estimates that the US requires an additional 10,000 cyber security professionals in order to keep on top of new and existing threats, or risk being left unprotected in an age of digital warfare.
