Elbit Systems launch MTC, Roshan awarded Afghan 3G licence and Clinton Global Initiative takes meetings online
Elbit Systems, a company dealing in digital defence equipment, has announced its selection as the sole provider of a "Mission Training Centre" for pilots of an unnamed Latin American Air Force.
The deal is said to be worth $18.5million to the military electronics company, and will involve training pilots to deal with the more complex mission scenarios in a simulated environment for the first time in the history of military aviation. The new technology will allow pilots to go through a comprehensive training regime, with the company's Aerospace Division Manager stating that its selection "attests to the trust in Elbit Systems' solutions" capability to deliver.
Roshan, one of Afghanistan's biggest telecoms providers, has been granted a licence to create and operate a 3G network in the country, with 3G mobile services expected to be operational in Afghanistan by the end of the year.
The company has so far been providing its customers with access to mobile internet via an enhanced version of traditional WAP browsing, although the announcement of a 3G launch is expected to secure Roshan's position as the market leader for smartphone devices in the country. Speaking after the announcement, Karim Khoja, CEO of Roshan, expressed his delight at the Afghanistan Government's decision, indicating that "3G technology is vital for economic growth and development in Afghanistan".
The Clinton Global Initiative, a group devised by former US President Bill Clinton, is set to embrace the digital age this week, by broadcasting its annual meeting online to a 50,000 strong audience. Students from the Laureate International University Network (LIUN), a conglomerate of over 60 education establishments and 750,000 students, will have access to the webcast as it is broadcast over the next two days.
Viewers will be able to witness talks from Bill Clinton, President Barack Obama and Presidential candidate Mitt Romney throughout the meeting, whilst representatives from LIUN institutions will use social networks to keep those who do not have access to the live stream up to date. According to LIUN CEO Douglas Becker, the institution is "proud to be part of this vital mission."
This will be the first time that the Clinton Global Initiative has broadcast its annual meeting online, with organisers hoping to inspire younger generations to become involved with their cause.
