Pulsant Ensures Bright Outlook for Royal Meteorological Society
READING, England, July 24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --
New consolidated web and data system to run on Pulsant's
energy efficient server platform
The Royal Meteorological Society (RMetS) is currently migrating its digital infrastructure to Pulsant's highly efficient managed hosting platform. The move is happening due to a major digital consolidation programme to bring RMetS's prime information site http://www.rmets.org, its member database and other interactive and social websites onto a single system based on Drupal open source software.
As a Learned and Professional Society, whose aim is to promote and advance the understanding of weather and climate, the RMetS provides invaluable membership services and support to academics, meteorologists, those whose work is affected by outside conditions and anyone who has a general interest in weather.
To better support the RMetS's many members, schools and public online initiatives - including the Weather Club, the Metlink teachers' site and the RMetS Shop - the Society is replacing its existing web and database platforms, which had become increasingly fragmented, inflexible and complex to manage, with a new integrated system. To optimise the solution, Pulsant was selected to provide a new server platform that would deliver more efficient and sustainable infrastructure while freeing RMetS from the burden of having to house and maintain hardware and invest in upgrades and new technology.
Kathy Maxwell, Head of IT and Technical Services, RMetS, explains, "We chose Pulsant for several reasons. They came highly recommended by our digital consultants; Deeson ONLINE, were local to our Reading based offices; and provided a comprehensive Enterprise SLA backed by the outstanding technical support and service we need to ensure that our new single platform will be a success. Without Pulsant, we simply wouldn't have had the IT resource to make this migration happen. We can now concentrate our efforts on developing the rich content, interactive services and integrated social forums that are required to stay compelling and relevant to our increasingly diverse and international member base."
Furthermore, in line with RMetS Corporate Responsibility Programme, Pulsant uses only the most advanced energy efficient servers as part of its managed service. It also has a strong focus on sustainability, which includes a commitment to ensuring that 100% of the energy used throughout all of its UK datacenters will come from renewable energy sources by October 2012.
Mark Howling, CEO of Pulsant states, "The RMetS sites receive around 4 million annual hits from people all over the world. We recognise the importance of its digital presence in delivering fast, reliable access to richer content as weather and climate issues become increasingly important for us all. We are committed to making sure their server infrastructure supports their goals with the best possible levels of service and look forward to supporting its new web-based functionality and features."
