There is a growing demand for built-in connectivity and telematics in automobiles. Connected cars are being developed to enhance the overall in-vehicle experience for the driver, providing internet facilities, social media applications and entertainment devices. This has led to partnerships between automakers and tech companies, and a recent report forecasts the automotive telematics market to grow at a rate of 23.37% by 2019 .
According to reports, Toyota Connected will develop connected vehicle networks that can share information on traffic and weather conditions, develop insurance coverage based on a driver's' own driving patterns and information service tailored to a driver's preferences. The new entity will also be used to further Toyota's research in robotics, AI and self-driving cars.
Consumers are looking toward self-driving cars and connected car technology to provide improved efficiency and safety for drivers. Telematics can equip cars with vehicle monitoring systems, location technology and real-time information about technical and maintenance work. This should help prevent crashes, and for this reason the global commercial telematics market is projected to grow 27.39% between 2016 and 2020.
A similar report on the Global Connected Car expects the connections market to grow 28%, because this technology can alert drivers in case of emergencies and help avoid accidents. It highlights the increased use of advanced sensors and chips inside connected cars that are helping OEMs to track the movement of cars.
