An online post indicates that the output volume of edible vegetable oil in China in 2012 was over 50 million tons. This is wrong as the import volume of soybeans in China in 2012 is mistaken for 158.38 million tons, and the correct import volume is 58.38 million tons. In 2012, the annual consumption volume of edible vegetable oil in China was about 30.3 million tons, increasing by 4.6% YOY. Soybean oil, rapeseed oil, palm oil and peanut oil take up the most shares of China edible vegetable oil market, and palm oil is mainly used for the food industry. Niche products including corn oil and olive oil account for an increasing share in China edible vegetable oil market in recent years. The major reason is that Chinese people think these varieties are healthier.
As the revenues from planting oil crops are rather lower in China and a large amount of labor force in rural areas moves to urban areas, the output volume of oil crops in China can hardly increase at high speed. Therefore, increasing imports is the major channel to meet the growing demand for vegetable oil. In 2012, the imported edible vegetable oil in China was 8.45 million tons, increasing by 28.7% YOY; the import value was USD 9.69215 billion, increasing by 25.6%; palm oil was imported most. In addition, China has imported numerous oil crops. In 2012, the import volume of soybeans was 58.38 million tons, increasing by 11.2% YOY; that of rape seeds was 2.93 million tons, increasing by 132% YOY.
In China, there are tens of thousands of edible oil processing enterprises. The annual production capacity is over 200 million tons. Top 10 enterprises take up the most shares of China edible vegetable oil market, including Yihai Kerry, COFCO Corporation, Chinatex Corporation and Cargill.
China edible vegetable oil industry is confronted with some problems during its development process. For example: Whether transgenic products are harmful to people's health? How can we completely prevent lawless persons from substituting vegetable oil with swill-cooked dirty oil to sell to consumers?
In 2012, the consumption per capita of edible vegetable oil in China was 22kg, approximate to the global average volume. As Chinese meals are mainly made through frying which is highly oil-consuming and the population in China still keeps increasing, it is predicted that the consumption volume of edible vegetable oil in China will keep growing. Oil crop planting enterprises and vegetable oil processing and trading enterprises around the world can find huge investment opportunities in China.
